Maximize Your Studio Rental: Tips for Photographers & Creators

Make the most of your time in the studio with these pro tips.

Renting a photography studio can completely elevate your work — whether you're a seasoned photographer, a content creator, or a small business owner needing brand visuals. But unlike outdoor or lifestyle shoots, a studio session requires a different kind of prep to ensure things run smoothly and creatively.

If you're planning to rent a studio like ours in Knoxville, Tennessee, here’s how to get the most out of your time in the space (and walk away with content that feels intentional, high-end, and on-brand).

1. Know What You’re Shooting Before You Arrive

It sounds simple, but showing up with a clear vision can save tons of time. Whether you're planning headshots, a product shoot, or lifestyle content, map out your goals ahead of time. A loose shot list or mood board can help you stay on track and make quick creative decisions while you’re in the studio.

2. Plan Your Time Realistically

If you're only booking an hour, keep it simple — think: 1-2 setups, a single outfit change, and minimal props. For more detailed work (multiple outfits, set changes, or different lighting styles), consider booking at least 2–3 hours to avoid feeling rushed. Remember, your rental time includes setup and teardown.

3. Use What the Studio Offers

Take advantage of what’s already in the space! At Photologie, we offer interchangeable backdrops, props, seasonal sets, natural light and artificial light options, and furniture pieces that work for everything from editorial shoots to cozy family sessions. Ask ahead of time what’s available and feel free to build your shoot around it.

4. Pack Smart

Don’t show up with a car full of gear you won’t use. Bring only what you need:

  • Camera & lenses

  • Extra batteries + SD cards

  • Outfit changes (on hangers!)

  • Props or product samples

  • Light snacks/water if it’s a longer session

  • Your inspiration board or shot list (printed or on your phone)

If you're renting the space for a client session, prep your clients with this list too!

5. Experiment With Light

Studios give you more control than shooting on-location — use that to your advantage! Try mixing natural light with a reflector, playing with shadows, or bringing in constant lighting for an editorial vibe. If you're unfamiliar with artificial lighting, studio rentals are a great low-pressure place to practice.

6. Clean Up Thoughtfully

Always leave the studio how you found it. Put furniture back, throw away trash, and return any props used. This ensures a smooth experience for everyone and keeps you in good standing with the studio for future bookings.

7. Capture BTS (Behind the Scenes)

Your studio session doesn’t end with the final photo. Snap a few BTS photos or videos for reels, stories, or blog content. Tag the studio and vendors — it's a great way to cross-promote and attract more business.
